1982 Right Bank Bordeaux Dinner
New York, NY 10013
No other vintage has before or since had the impact of 1982. A brilliant year in itself, it propelled Robert Parker to wine stardom and created a new generation of wine lovers large enough to change the Bordeaux market forever. 1982 produced a large crop of highly concentrated and profound wines on both the left and right bank, with the best examples coming from the northern Medoc, Pomerol and St. Emilion. When the 82’s were released, they were quickly perceived as the potential “vintage of the decade”. While there were a few detractors who felt the wines were too Californian in style and unlikely to age well, in tasting after tasting they have been proved wrong. Nearly forty years later the wines have aged beautifully, archetypal Bordeaux, and today most are at their apogee. Flowering was even and early with dry and warm weather continuing through the summer. The harvest began on September 14th in perfect conditions. Hot and stormy weather in July made parts of Graves and Margaux less successful (apart from Chateau Margaux) however St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien, St-Emilion, and Pomerol all produced brilliant wines. In fact, the 82’s are no lower in acid than other exceptionally ripe years such as 1961, 1959, 1953, 1949, and 1947, all of which had higher pH levels.1982 is a powerful vintage which produced reference standard examples of many of the greatest wines in Bordeaux. It will be fascinating comparing the best wines from Pomerol and St. Emilion to see how they are evolving.
